Maker Festival Is Back This Summer And More Humungous Than Ever
Last year Maker Festival saw over 10,000 people visit the Toronto Reference Library to soak up the city’s maker spirit – even the Mayor called to ask if he could make an appearance! (We said yes, so long as he met the giant puppet).
As always, the main Festival event, the Maker Extravaganza, will take place at the Toronto Reference Library – set for July 9th & 10th. This year, we’re taking over even more of the library, spilling into extra spaces, and closing down the side street! (Think maker-mobiles, performances, fire!?) We’re excited to fill the space with over 100 makers – the Call for Makers will be announced this month!
In the meantime, we’re also upping the ante on spectacles and experiences inside and out (think installations, sculptures, demonstrations, experiences!) Find out more and send in your proposal here.
But there’s more! Last year was the first time Maker Festival expanded to include over 45 Satellite Events hosted by community partners spread across the city – including workshops, talk series, open houses and hackathons, all in one week! This year, we expect over eighty satellite events, including a return of the highly successful Make Change Conference that kicked-off as part of Maker Festival last year. Find out more and apply to contribute to Make Change here.
How will we run a free event at this scale with a team made up entirely of volunteers? GOOD QUESTION. In order to pull off this feat, we need two things:
1. Capable and creative volunteer co-organizers to join us on the existing team, spread the load, share in the magic, and contribute to the creation of Canada’s largest Maker event yet. Click here to find out more and register your interest!
2. Financial fuel from supportive donors and values-aligned companies/institutions who are interested in backing Maker Festival, and the creative communities, collaborative movement, and entrepreneurial ecosystem it represents. You can find out more about becoming a VIP/donor here, or get in touch with our Executive Director Jen Dodd if you’re interested in our sponsorship opportunities.
Our mission at Maker Festival is to inspire openness to possibilities, a sense of active participation in shaping our world, and a yearning for a more wonder-filled tomorrow – we hope you’ll join us on this adventure!
Strap on your imaginations people, tighten your safety goggles, and set your dials to curious –
the biggest Maker event in Canada is about to drop this summer, and you’re gonna wanna be there.
Love, the Maker Festival team xo
p.s. are you a Maker?! The Call for Contributors will be out shortly – stay tuned!
